This is the second book in the Asylum for the Mechanically Insane. These books MUST be read in order as the books build upon each other. It is a serial of steampunk, horror, and romance. Captain Moreton has been sent to recuperate and observe what is being accomplished by the scientists at Harbury Hall in regards in airships. While there he again meets his one true love, Mrs. Vivienne Stanton-Foley, now a widow and mistress to an Indian warlord, Thakur Sahib Kerala. Kerala wants to see what his money is being spent on at Harbury Hall's laboratories. Dr. Ringwood has been working on an explosive device that Kerala wants to take back to India. Ringwood, however, has other ideas about how to use this device--ideas about how much more money he could get for it. I like the heroic characters in Destruction. Captain Moreton is a hero who should not be alive but somehow he survived. I like Vivienne. She knows she must do what she can to survive in this world. She also knows her choices did not make her popular and lives with the choices she made. Now it looks like she and the Captain may be able to change the course of their lives. Again Portia and Inspector Burke are investigating what is happening at Harbury Hall and how much the current Lord and Lady have to do with the disappearances and deaths that are happening there. Portia's connection to the prisoner also strengthens and she is determined to free him. Again the villains are hiss-worthy here. Dr. Ringwood and Thakur Sahib Kerala deserve each other. Creepy! I look forward to book 3 |
